There is a new Zelle-related text scam originating from 805 and 806 phone numbers.
The text message typically states:
"Did You Send A $200 Zelle Payment to [NAME] on [DATE]? Reply YES or NO."
When the member replies "NO," they receive a follow-up message such as:
"Thank You For Confirming This Transaction. Your Call Case ID is #XXXXX. For the Safety Of Your Account, We Will Have a Representative Contact You."
Shortly thereafter, the scammer calls the member posing as a fraud representative and attempts to gain their trust. The scammer may:
- Request online banking credentials or verification codes.
- Instruct the member to go to a CVS or another retailer and load funds to a barcode they provide.
- Direct the member to purchase items from Amazon and ship them to a specific address.
-
Convince the member to send money through Zelle or other payment methods under the guise of securing their account.
THIS IS ANOTHER ATTEMPT TO GAIN ACCESS TO YOUR ACCOUNT. NEVER PROVIDE INFORMATION, MOVE MONEY OR SEND MERCHANDISE TO SOMEONE YOU DON'T KNOW.
